ACADEMIC EVALUATION

In accordance with the policy of the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE), up to 80% of the year’s marks are calculated based on the student’s diligence in completing homework, projects, and assignments, as well as their attitude and participation in the classroom. If the student fails to cooperate in these regards, they will forfeit points.

HOMEWORK

Homework should be a functional application of the lessons taught. Homework provides students with the opportunity to improve skills by evaluating their ability to apply what they have learned.

Homework serves as preparation or foundation for further learning content. The effectiveness of lesson delivery can be greatly determined by the quality of homework that is checked. An equitable time allocation between subjects should take place to ensure sufficient time for revision and study.

Educators should develop assignments and the time allocated to them according to a framework per grade. The framework should include classroom and homework. Clear guidelines are provided so that students know exactly what is expected of them. Educators should be realistic with the amount of homework given, for example, only three assignments per week.

Gr. 8 1 ½ hours per school day

Gr. 9 2 hours per school day

Gr. 10 2 ½ hours per school day (25 minutes per subject)

Gr. 11 3 hours per school day (30 minutes per subject)

Gr. 12 4 hours per school day (40 minutes per subject)

The role of the parent or guardian regarding performance motivation, encouragement of language development, and provision of general learning opportunities should be emphasized.

The home environment should provide a secure space that accommodates a dedicated study area and study schedule. Mastery of the subject matter should be encouraged and motivated. Peer influence plays a role in study habits.

The content uniqueness of the subject will determine the method to be followed in mastering the subject. Each educator is an expert in their field and continuously provides the required study method to master a specific section of the work to the learner.
